Twitter - Making Profit From Micro-blogging?

Twitter is a simple idea which has quickly become the fastest growing social network since it was launched in 2007. Recent predictions are that it will have over ten million members by the end of 2009 and people are signing up in their thousands per day. But why is it growing so fast? Where else can Mr Average find out what his favourite stars are doing in their private life, what they're eating and how they're relaxing? He can't, not without a hefty court injunction being issued anyway. That sounds daft but people who would never consider other social-networks are joining Twitter just for these reasons. Often because celebrities promoting their own twitter accounts and Twitter is being mentioned during normal TV shows, for example Twitter is frequently mentioned during This Morning which is the top daytime TV program in the UK. This global appeal also means that it's possible to now reach out world-wide and promote things for very little outlay and make a profit from people's eagerness to follow other's lives. Large companies are already starting to realise this for example Starbucks and Vodafone have already run promotions via Twitter. Once their promotions were posted Twitter users quickly started sending the details onto their friends (this is known as re-tweeting). This has proven that Twitter promotions can have a snowball effect and grow well beyond the original targeted audience.


So how can we cash in on this phenomenon with a minimum of effort? Self-promotion done the right way is a very easy and efficient way of spreading the word about a product or idea. It won't be long before companies start looking for Twitter users that have a large following and want to use them to kick start a promotion out into the Twitterverse as quickly as possible. People who start building their number of followers now could be sitting on a money spinner very soon.
