Two Ultimate South American Travel Destinations
South America abounds with adventure travel options for more active types of vacations, opportunities to view different types of ecology and the nature that goes along with them, chances to learn about ancient civilizations, modern cities where you can get a feel for the current culture and much more. Following are some of the not-to-be-missed places you'll find here. Iguazu Falls Iguazu Falls, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site, are the second largest falls in the world. They are actually located in both Argentina and Brazil with the largest portion being in Argentina, which is where most people go to visit them. Part of the reason for this is the additional visa that may be required, for example, for Americans and Canadians. While one can get closer to the falls on the Argentinean side, the Brazilian side offers a better panoramic view. The falls plunge down from a height comparable to a 24-story building. Rather than a single fall, there can be a few hundred of them along a two-mile length of cliff. There are fourteen making up the Devil's Throat which is one of the highlights of the Argentinean falls. Because of the great force of the water, there is a huge spray which results in constant rainbows. Other areas to visit on that side are the Circuito Superior and the Circuito Inferior which allow for some different views of the falls. The Isla San Martin also offers different viewpoints as well as an opportunity to see many birds. The Sendero Macuco is a trail with a great deal of wildlife and not so widely traveled. In both countries, the falls are part of national parks which include the surrounding jungle. Each park has trails where you can see many different species of birds, animals, reptiles and insects, particularly butterflies. In addition to walks around the area, it's also possible to do some tours by boat. Rio de Janeiro Rio de Janeiro is a city like no other with options for tourists of every type imaginable. The second largest city in the Brazil, it naturally offers plenty of places to enjoy great Brazilian food, an exciting nightlife and a wide variety of museums. Located right on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, it even has several beaches to relax on. That relaxed beach culture spreads over into the entire city making it a great place to chill. One of things the city is most known for is Carnaval. This is a two week long party that more than rivals Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The singing and dancing will go on every night until dawn. Also a treat are the parades with floats and costumes. Carnaval happens every year before Lent, sometime in February or March. Any time of year, however, this is a great place for people who love dancing. Something that you might not have realized is that this is even a destination to enjoy some nice hiking trails. For example, you can take the Parque Lage - Cocovado trail which will bring you along to some waterfalls and can also make your way up to the Cristo Redentor. At slightly under 40 meters tall, it's considered the second largest art deco statue in the world.
