A lot of newer cars come with these dashboard units installed these days. They tend to have good sized screens and fit seamlessly in with your other dashboard fixtures. You can also install a unit with a friction mount on your dashboard, or even fix one onto your windshield in a way that would be permanent. The main advantage to having one of these permanent types of GPS units installed is that they'll fit in your car and look nicely without being in the way or standing out. The portable devices can do the same things as a permanently fixed one, but it's also easy to take the device with you when you're riding in a friends vehicle, or when you are going on a long walk in an unfamiliar area. There are a lot of different hand held units today for various uses--golf, fish finders, etc--but the most common is still the portable types of GPS that get you where you need to go. A lot of the nicer ones these days have some pretty easy options for installing them in your car in an unobtrusive way, too. For instance, a suction cup that secures to your dashboard. This won't hurt your vehicle, stays where it's put, but when you need to is still easily able to come off and go with you.
