If you are just starting out in the world of golf you may find yourself a bit stuck as to what golf clubs to get. Many new starters have a borrowed set or an old second hand set to play with but as you get into the game you will undoubtedly start to want your own brand new professional set. A usual set has 14 golf clubs in total but when you are just starting out you surely wont need that many. Try starting out with five or six clubs and then you can build on those later on as your game progresses. Try a set that includes a five iron, seven iron, nine iron, putter and wood just to start off with.
So what kind of golf clubs do you need, what do each of them do? Your basic golf club set consists of woods, irons and putters.
Woods
These are used for hitting the golf ball over long distances; they are so called woods as the head of the golf club used to be made out of wood from the persimmon tree. These days you are more likely to find them in steel, titanium or a mixture of titanium and graphite.
There are different types of wood clubs. The Number 1 wood is also known as the driver. This club hits the ball further than any other and it recommended you include this golf club in your starting set. There are also other numbered woods that hit a little shorter but also a little higher with every number increment. There are now regulations on drivers. Make sure your driver head is no larger than 460cc and the COR rating is below 0.83. If you are unsure about this just ask the supplier or manufacturer who will easily be able to tell you.
Irons
These clubs are just as capable as the woods except they do not hit the ball so far. The number 1 iron will hit the ball low and long whereas the number 9 will hit the ball high up and short. All wedge irons will hit the ball high and short but with varying degrees of loft.
Putters
The putter is designed to smoothly roll the ball over the green rather than give it any kind of lift. These clubs are for when you are trying to ‘put’ the ball into the hole with a smooth, slow and gentle roll of the ball.
Never be afraid to have a shop around and do a bit of research on your golf club make.
