U.s. Space & Rocket Center
Visitors to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center learn about the progression of the country’s space program from the early days of the Mercury and Gemini programs to today’s International Space Station. They may view training capsules from the Mercury and Gemini days and learn about the Apollo moon missions and the space shuttle program. The Davidson Center for Space Exploration museum contains one of the largest collections of rockets in the world. Visitors may see the huge replica of the Apollo 11 Saturn V rocket. The museum houses hundreds of pieces of space and rocket hardware. The new exhibit The Force! provides hands-on activities. Visitors experience a simulated test firing of an F-1 engine. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center includes several special rides and attractions. Space Shot is a simulated rocket launch. In G Force Acceleration, riders experience three times the force of gravity. The Apollo Cockpit Trainer simulates what it was like to be inside the Command Service Module on an Apollo moon mission. Visitors can explore Mars, the red planet, at the Mars Mission- Mars Climbing Wall attraction. Children under age 8 can explore a space station in the Kids Cosmo Energy Depletion Zone. The Discovery Theater presents three live shows daily on space exploration and technology. Visitors may enjoy IMAX presentations in the Spacedome Theater. During the week shows alternate every hour from 11am-3pm. The two current shows are Legends of Flight and Hubble. The weekend show is Sea Rex 3D, which is presented at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm. IMAX tickets may be purchased separately from regular admission tickets. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center hosts other scientific traveling exhibits. Two special exhibits are scheduled for the summer of 2011. Be the Dinosaur- Life in the Cretaceous is the world’s first dinosaur simulation. Advanced computer simulation will allow visitors to explore dinosaurs and their environment. A T.Rex Named Sue lets visitors see a life size skeleton cast of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. These exhibits run from May 21 to September 5. They are included with a paid museum admission. The center has two special programs geared toward young people. They can learn how scientists and astronauts train in Space Camp. Those interested in a career in military or commercial aviation may enjoy Aviation Challenge. These special camps are scheduled at various times during the year. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is located at Exit 15 off I-565 in Huntsville. It is open daily from 9am-5pm. Combination tickets which include admission to the museum, rocket park, and IMAX are $16.95 for adults and $11.95 for ages 3-12. IMAX tickets may be purchased alone for $7.50 for adults and $6.50 for ages 3-12.
