Uk Tenants To Have More Protection When Renting A House
The first of these plans is a ‘housing hotline’. Much like other government helplines, it will offer advice for private tenants free of charge. The reality is that the general public do not have adequate knowledge of their rights and the agencies they can contact if they are having issues with their landlord. This measure is intended to stop landlords from acting unscrupulously. Another interesting proposal is the launch of a government website that allows tenants to provide feedback on landlords and letting agents. Being black-listed on this government will hurt landlords considerably, especially in the current declining UK rental market. This scheme is of course open to abuse, so it will be interesting to see what measures the government put in place in order to avoid harming honest landlords. Another measure that has been placed in front of parliament is that written agreements will be a legal requirement for all tenancies. These agreements will state the rights of the tenant clearly, therefore hopefully decreasing the legal knowledge gap that exists amongst tenants. Furthermore these written agreements will include those living in shared homes on short term lets. The British economy relies heavily on the housing market and managing houses for rent is an important aspect of this. It is with this in mind that the new proposals should not make it too hard for landlords to operate in the UK. Tenant’s rights are important, but these should be weighed up with potential inconvenience for landlords that could discourage them from entering the UK rental market.
