Due to the great variety of possible school education levels there are a number of courses divided into four main groups. They are academic, vocational, technical and professional courses. Admissions for all these courses to be studied at the UK universities are generally the same. However, they may depend on the level and type of each course applied by students. For level 3 courses, for example a student usually needs a good school leaving qualification which must be equivalent to Intermediate level. For some courses, for example in Art and Design or Media courses a student should also have evidence of previous work which is defined and can be found in admissions application forms.

Higher education institutions may require evidence of acceptable level of spoken and written English. Here each course may require different levels of English language knowledge and different certificates as well. For example, a minimum level may require IELTS (International English Language Testing System) certificate with the average score of 5.5 or Cambridge First Certificate in English, or TOEFL (Test Of English as Foreign Language) certificate with minimum score number of 500, or GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) with minimum O level in English. Some courses may require even higher level of such certificates.


All these certificates are available for students who did not even live or study in Great Britain before applying for the UK higher education. For example, the British Council may provide IELTS exams and exam preparations throughout the world, and TOEFL exams are offered by many learning centers in almost all European countries. However, costs for exams may vary.
