Us Immigration Reform Debate
The argument on immigration centers on the rate of immigration into America. Propelling the debate are people who believe the government should take action to prevent that immigration. This plays heavily into the US immigration news, especially when people debate the contribution of immigrants to society. Some claim these individuals contribute a lot to society in terms of jobs and culture, while others maintain there are too many criminals immigrating to the United States and taking advantage of our legal system. Immigrants have a lot to add, especially in terms of culture. This diversity can help break stereotypes down, but it also has the effect of distancing. While this helps people learn how to interact with different races and cultures, it also can be difficult if there is a language barrier. Because of this miscommunication, the US immigration news covers the debate quite thoroughly. This diversity can be a good thing, adding to America’s melting pot, but others argue that it makes America lose its identity. Perhaps the biggest hot spot is the issue of immigrants in the workforce. Typically, immigrants take the lower paying jobs off the market, which can sometimes take away jobs from other Americans. The reason this can be positive is that cheap labor often leads to cheaper product prices for the average consumer. However, while it might make more products readily available at lower prices, it often puts other Americans out of a job, especially as they cannot compete with the low wages. If you have been following the US immigration news, then you know that even illegal aliens can take away jobs from a law abiding American citizen. Another debate is whether America is obligated to present these individuals with the escape for which they are looking. Colonists founded the United States based on religious and political freedom, and by restricting immigrants, we are going back on our word. This emotional plea is hard to ignore, but some of the facts make it hard to see just what is at stake. Some claims in US immigration news show that immigrants are more dependent on the government, and taxpayers’ dollars for support. Some studies support this, saying that immigrants take up a lot of the budget for health care, retirement, education and welfare. This would not be a problem if the immigrants contributed more to taxes, but because many of them are not making much money, they cannot contribute the same as many other Americans. These are some of the basics to keep in mind if you plan to follow the US immigration news. You should know however, that any changes to immigration reform will take a long time, and likely will be just as complicated as the debates preceding it.
