This can be a very rewarding career path because it encompasses so many different responsibilities. Some new medical assistants expect to only work with patients, but they will most likely have some administrative duties as well. For example, they may be required to answer the phones and schedule appointments for patients. Some medical assistants take an interest in a particular field of medicine and can be trained to assist doctors only in that field. For example, an optometrist assistant may be able to teach patients how to use contact lenses, while a podiatrist assistant can make castings of feet. However, additional schooling may be required in order to be eligible for these positions.

The medical assistant job description can be difficult to understand because there are so many different aspects of the job. However, for many people considering getting into the field, this is exactly what makes it so appealing. In addition to administrative responsibilities, they get to assist the doctor by working directly with patients and taking part in their care. With additional training, they may be able to work with a specialist and focus their career on a particular field of medicine.
