Understanding A Medical Assistant Job Description
Some new medical assistants expect to only work with patients, but they will most likely have some administrative duties as well. For example, they may be required to answer the phones and schedule appointments for patients. They will also, in most cases, be asked to assist with things such as sorting mail and greeting patients as they arrive for their appointments. There are some administrative duties that are more directly related to patient care, however. For example, many assistants help with updating patient files and submitting their claims to their insurance companies. They may also be asked to arrange tests as required by the doctor and to take part in the complicated medical billing process, both of which are an important part of patient care. Of course, there are many cases in which a medical assistant works directly with the patients in a medical capacity. Many are qualified to take medical history, prep patients for their visit and even to collect lab specimens for testing. The degree to which assistants can participate in these activities is determined by the state and differs in every region, so it is important to research the policies in a given state before taking a position as a medical assistant. Some medical assistants take an interest in a particular field of medicine and can be trained to assist doctors only in that field. For example, an optometrist assistant may be able to teach patients how to use contact lenses, while a podiatrist assistant can make castings of feet. However, additional schooling may be required in order to be eligible for these positions. The medical assistant job description can be difficult to understand because there are so many different aspects of the job. However, for many people considering getting into the field, this is exactly what makes it so appealing. In addition to administrative responsibilities, they get to assist the doctor by working directly with patients and taking part in their care. With additional training, they may be able to work with a specialist and focus their career on a particular field of medicine.
