Understanding Panic Attacks While Sleeping

Have you ever been unfortunate enough to suffer from panic attacks while sleeping? If yes, then you are not alone. Surprisingly this condition is common and happens to many people. One of the major causes of panic while sleeping is stress or unresolved issues in your life. Specific causes would be a change in your lifestyle, divorce, job loss or death of a loved one.

When people experience panic attacks while sleeping they feel they are about to die due to suffocation or they are afflicted with a deadly disease. And when they wake up, they are afraid to go back to sleep as the memories of their panic attacks while sleeping are still fresh. When this type of reaction persists, people can suffer from insomnia. People suffering from panic attacks while sleeping may also manifest physical symptoms such as headaches, backaches, sore muscles, fast and irregular heartbeats.

The first thing to remember when you are experiencing panic attacks while sleeping is that it is not a serious condition. When you are in this type of situation or condition, you think that you are fully awake. However try as you might for some reason or another, you cannot move your limbs. It should be noted that this is but a natural reaction of the human body when a person is asleep. During sleep, an individual experiences paralysis. This is necessary in order for your muscles and organs to fully rest and recharge. What you need to be aware of is that with the panic attacks while sleeping condition, your body is attempting to resolve unaddressed issues in your life. So what you need to do is to sort out things or events that are bothering you or are getting in the way of you leading a contented existence. Talk to a friend, consult a doctor or professional. It may be that there are bottled emotions inside you that need to be let out such as feelings of fear, anxiety, grief, and anger. All these emotional states when in excessive amounts can cause you to suffer from this condition.

Another way of treating panic attacks while sleeping is to engage in hobbies or physical activities. This can get you to channel any pent-up emotions or feelings of aggression into highly productive pursuits. Get into a light exercise program. At the minimum spend around 30 minutes to one hour of your time everyday to perform light physical activities, such as brisk walking, aerobics, and even dancing.

One other effective approach in dealing with panic attacks while sleeping is to practice mediation, yoga and other similar relaxation activities. When performing these disciplines, you need to be in a quiet and relaxing environment. Your area should also be conducive to peaceful and relaxing thoughts. Keep in mind thought that results may not happen overnight and that you will see changes in a gradual fashion. Through repetition and constant practice, your mind will be conditioned to always be in a calm state regardless of the situation, minimizing the occurrence of panic attacks while sleeping.
