Understanding The Importance Of Position In No Limit Hold'em
What is position? The basic answer to this question is position is the order in which players are seated around a poker table. These positions can be broken down into sections. The first section, which includes all the players who are first to act preflop, is considered "early position." The last section of players, who are later to act preflop, are considered "late position." Players can be "in position" or "out of position" against specific opponents at the table. A player is in position against any player who acts before him and is out of position against players who act after him. Because the button acts last on every street after the flop, the player on the button is considered to be in position against the entire table. Now that we have defined position, we can discuss why it is important. Players in the early position section of the table are hindered because they do not have the opportunity to gather as much information as players in late position. Poker is a game of imperfect information, but the player who can gather the most information and interpret that information best will have an advantage over his opponents. Early position players gather less information because they are forced to act before the rest of the table. These players are unaware of what actions late position players might take. On the other hand, late position players can gather more information because they have seen the actions of early position players. This gives these players an advantage because they can make a decision based upon information gathered about the actions of the players who have acted. Players in early position should adapt to their handicap, so they may attempt to counteract their positional disadvantage counteract. While they cannot completely nullify their disadvantage, there are steps they can take to lessen it. One thing early position players can do to help is to only play strong hands preflop. Playing weak hands in early position is troublesome because of the likelihood that a player behind them has a better hand. The players that act after early position players can also use their position to their advantage, thus making weak hands even worse to play. Players in late position, though, can play a wider range of hands, since they have gathered much more information about their opponents holdings. The same goes for decisions after the flop, also known as "post-flop" decisions. This extra information late position players gather can help them make decisions on whether to bet, check, fold or raise. These players are also able to bluff than early position players because of their extra knowledge. A bluff is defined as a bet or raise with a hand which is not thought of to be the best hand. It's objective is to induce a player with a better hand to fold. This is a much easier task to accomplish in late position because the early position player has little knowledge of the late position players holdings while also giving away information about his own holdings by acting first.
