Understanding The Process Of The 8a Certification

The 8a certification program was created by the Small Business Administration of the US, which enables equal access in applying for government contracts. The administration of this 8a program by the SBA is to primarily allow minority groups and economically and socially disadvantaged members of different races such as Hispanics, Asians, Blacks and Native Americans. This can also be very useful for some small businesses that are owned by women. Companies who get their 8a certification can get a lot of advantages from different opportunities coming from the federal government such as the access to capital, technical and managerial assistance, and a lot more.

It is very useful for a company to obtain its 8a certification as soon as possible since the federal government is already allotting a huge sum of money to different projects that only allow those businesses with the certification to participate. Those companies with such certification are able to bid or acquire contracts that can be worth more than 4 million dollars for services and goods and 6.5 million dollars for manufacturing.

These days there are already a number of firms that assist businesses to get their certification. One of the common reasons why companies hire these services is to save more time in getting the certification. Getting this particular type of certificate can be very difficult and time-consuming to do unless the business is already experienced in the process. This can sometimes take several months to complete, not including the additional months of delay once errors are spotted on the application. Nowadays, the SBA has made an easier way of applying for this certification with the help of the online application. Nevertheless, the online application is just a small portion of the entire process required.

Another reason why businesses rely on online services is the high possibility of getting the procedure right the first time. Usually, most applications that are returned are those which are prepared by companies on their own. Some of the usual reasons for these returned applications are incomplete data and missing documents. Because of this, extra time and money can be wasted.

When an application is submitted, the SBA will have a 90-day period in order to review the application and return it to the applicant if there are errors or mistakes. Usually the SBA informs the company about the problems spotted in the application. If these errors or inconsistencies are not corrected within the given time frame, the application will be automatically denied. Most of the time, a complete application consists of 200 pages or more, including the supporting documents.

Because of these complexities in filing for a certification, it is recommended that businesses hire professional services to do the job. Roughly three quarters of the total applications get denied by the SBA due to application error, which makes it very important to get it right the first time. Once the application is denied, a company is required to wait for at least 12 months to reapply for the certification.
