Unique Challenges Of Arizona Landscaping

For landscapers, Arizona presents many unique challenges to overcome. Stemming from the many different USDA plant hardiness zones in the state, a great deal of research and effort will be required to be able to select the right plants for your yard and maintain a beautiful lawn year round in this dry southern state.

If you live in Arizona (or anywhere else) you should familiarize yourself with the USDA plant hardiness zone map. It is a godsend to every landscaper and gardener in the country because it outlines exactly what kind of plants will thrive in your local climate. This will save you from potentially buying and planting plants that will not do very well in your city. Arizona has many different zones so it is especially important for Arizona landscapers to know exactly which zone they are in. If you are careful, and choose plants geared for your zone and local climate, then you should be able to follow standard landscaping procedures to create a thriving garden.

But climate is only the first half of the picture. You need to make sure that your plants can survive in your local climate and your local soil conditions. If the soil conditions aren’t ideal for your plant, than it will fare no better than plants that aren’t geared towards your zone. The good news is that with careful research and a little bit of work, unlike with climate conditions you can change your soil conditions to suit your plant.

If you are landscaping in a slightly colder area of Arizona, with a little bit of extra effort, you can plant plants that are meant for a slightly warmer zone. You can either use these plants as annuals (meaning that they die each winter and you replant new ones in the spring), or you can place them in containers and move them to where it’s warmest. Some people plant such plants against a protected side of their house so it is sheltered from the worst of the cold weather. If you choose to landscape with such plants, you will need to take great care of the plants during the winter months to ensure they survive to the spring.

Using Native Plants

Using native plants to your area is one of the best and easiest ways to guarantee that your landscaping efforts will not be in vain. Many of the highlands and deserts of Arizona have unique and interesting flora that will thrive in your garden and help blend your garden in with the surrounding nature, making it seem less artificial. Many of these plants have amazingly beautiful life cycles that change through ought the season. For example, if you live in a desert area, try planting a saguaro cactus. One last thing, wherever possible, when purchasing native plants you should buy from a respected local nursery. Purchasing your plants from respectable local nurseries will ensure that your plants are best suited for your soil conditions and climate.
