Unusual Approach From Nl

It certainly isn’t something that is seen in general in the United Kingdom but cars, bikes and pedestrians sharing the same space when it comes to travelling is a scheme being encouraged in the Netherlands, and the idea hasn’t gone unnoticed by British councils.

The idea of the new scheme is that if all members of the public are required to use the same space when it comes to travelling around regardless of their method of transport there is a more careful and safe approach from all commuters. Cars drive at a much slower rate and are more courteous to those on foot and pedestrians are more aware of the other vehicles around them.
There are a lot of people who use they bicycle to get to and from work, children and whole families are often seen doing the school run so these areas are very likely to be busy.

This method of road mapping is being placed within residential areas and has been a success for the Dutch, which is why the people in Norfolk have decided to give it a try themselves. Some sceptics have pointed out that there is a much larger influence of bicycles and pedestrians within the Netherlands so the balance may not be the same, but plans of designing such an area is going ahead.

The areas are constructed and limited by things such as benches, trees etc. These are placed in a manner that guides those using the road but also to stop it being possible for cars to drive too quickly even when the area is quiet, as they would be likely to hit an obstacle.

The large scheme target is to show that by changing the way the road rules work, we could in fact create a safer environment and therefore make insurance for cars much cheaper. However it is still to be seen if this method is going to be embraced by the rest of the United Kingdom, but time will only tell!
