Wanting to construct a boat you can quickly construct within a few weekends? Then, you could seriously take into account going over some small boat plans. Small boats works perfectly with novice boat builders. It allows you to get your feet wet in the process of making a boat without having to undergo all the frustration and risk. That's not saying advanced builders are wont to construct this kind of boat too. I've constructed a couple of watercraft and I still derive so much pleasure in building a small boat.

Materials
You need to determine what type of boat material you are going to use. Most common materials utilized for simple boats are wood. And it can make sense too especially considering that most novice boat builder would have a basic stable foundation in woodworking.
However, there's no stopping you if you ever decide to use various materials as well enjoy aluminum or fiberglass. Each of these materials absolutely has its positive aspects but you need to make sure you have the tools and skill to do the job with those materials.

Boat Building Techniques
The method on top of my mind when it comes to small boat constructing is stitch and glue method.
Probably since this method is considered to be one of the easiest to implement. And it also helps that this technique requires lesser materials used.
Even so, ply over frame procedure of building a small boat is also something you can also consider. It's not as easy as stitch and glue but its longevity more than makes up for whatever additional techniques you need to do for this method.

Small Boat Plans
As I have pointed out earlier, small watercraft are typically the easiest boat to build. But you should not make the mistake of discounting the use of excellent small boat plans. After all, it is still the high quality of the boat's blueprints that can single-handedly make or break a boat building project.

This is why, I have always emphasized on having high quality boat plans. A strong indicator of a plan's high quality is its simple to follow instruction. No need for guesswork, no need for unnecessary confusion. And I have personally observed that most boat plans that has this performance are those that comes with elaborate illustrations. Probably because photos are able to make clear things that no amount of words can.
