Are junk food and video games two of the defining images of childhood in today's world? Unfortunately it often seems as though these two items are at the centre of many young people's lifestyles. Does this matter? If so, how can you go about changing the way that your children live?
The reality of being a parent can often seem like a rather daunting one. We're all aware that our kids pay quite a bit of attention to what we say and do - until they're teenagers at least! We have a responsibility towards them and it goes without saying that we want them to have the best life possible.
Knowing how to achieve our aims is not always easy - there's no comprehensive list of exactly what is best for them and how we should help them along. We have to use our instincts.
It seems clear to many of us that junk food can't be great for our kids. How about things like video games and television? These don't necessarily create a problem, but they surely do when they start taking up too many hours. If these activities are taking place to the exclusion of all others than there may be some serious dangers.
Most obviously, it could be that your children are simply not getting enough exercise. This might seem like a relatively minor issue but it can become quite dangerous.
Children who fail to lead healthy lifestyles are more likely to suffer from health problems - the bad habits picked up in childhood may continue into their adult lives.
So how can you help them in this instance? One way is by showing them that active games can be great fun. There's no reason why they should be more boring than computer games. Just because an activity involves more exercise, that doesn't make it dull.
You can demonstrate this by introducing them to some of the best games that can be played in your garden. Few children are bored, for example, by trampolines, swings and slides. Although some such equipment may be expensive, there are plenty of budget options around too.
It's certainly worthwhile to spend time showing your children that they can exercise, keep fit and have fun all at the same time.
They'll soon wonder why they ever spent so much time playing video games.
