Use The Proper Closures When Sewing For Dolls Using Velcro

Make Dressing Dolly Easy!

Do you remember your first pair of shoes? I do! They had some fun character on the side and they were Velcro! I was fascinated. I could slip in my feet and in seconds be out the door to play. Remember your next pair of shoes? These were no where near as fun. They had laces and the laces had to be tied or I would trip. There are methods of teaching that include bunnies and trees and holes, but it all added up to confusion. Once I got the hang of it, I tied every lace I could find, whether there were feet in them or not. As much as I enjoyed the laces, I still longed for the simplicity of Velcro. When little hands dress Dolly, they will appreciate the simplicity Velcro has to offer as well.

To be fair, we will explore the various closures one can use when finishing up Dolly’s outfits.

Snaps: These are very small and need to be hand sewn. They are relatively easy to fasten and unfasten, but if young fingers don’t exert the right pressure, they can end up frustrated and Dolly can be more exposed than what she is comfortable with.

Buttons: Once again, they are very small and much detail is required to ensure the holes are small enough they won’t pop out. If you thought snaps were difficult, picture little fingers maneuvering tiny buttons through tiny holes. Does the outfit really need buttons to finish it off? One alternative is to make loops to hook the buttons through, but once again, remember small hands. Instead, I sew them up the front as an embellishment or on top of the Velcro closure to give it the look like it was buttoned up.

Zippers: Ouch! If you can manage to keep your fingers from getting closed up in them, they make a decent alternative for a closure. Use a regular skirt zipper and cut to length after it has been installed. Remember the tiny space you have to work with. Use an exposed zipper application method (illustration here) if you choose this option.

Velcro: While I have used the above options with marginal success, I mainly use Velcro closures when sewing for dolls because it is so easy! I only use the sew-on variety as the glue-on strips or dots will only gum up your needle and make a mess of your stitching. I cut it to length and then cut it in half lengthwise. Then I stitch just under the fabric. Make sure you line both the hook and loop side of the Velcro up right! Kids then pull apart the Velcro, slide the outfit off, and change it out and then press the Velcro closures together. It can get stuck in Dolly’s hair, but overall, I find it the most versatile for what I need.

Keep in mind the style of the outfit and who will be dressing Dolly. There are instances where snaps or another option may be much better for what you need. Use the right closures for the right type of outfit and Dolly will always be dressed for any occasion.
