Used Laptop Auctions: 5 Ways To Score A Deal

You've decided to get a used laptop, and are looking for a way to get the best deal. You may have considered buying through an online auction site such as ebay. This can be a great idea, as you'll have a very broad selection to choose from.

So, how do you make sure that you're getting the best deal possible on your used laptop? Check out these five tips that will help you find the perfect laptop for you at a price you'll love.

1. Know What You Need

Since there are all manner of different laptops brand, styles, and configurations available on the used market, you'll need to narrow down what you're looking for. If you're looking to travel with your laptop, look for a lightweight model. If you're a gamer, get a gaming laptop. By purchasing exactly what you need, you'll make sure that you don't overspend on features you don't need.

2. Know Your Budget

Closely related to this is knowing your budget. If you've got an upper limit on what you can spend, stick with it. It's just that simple. Letting yourself overspend is never a good thing, so just say no.

3. Be Willing to Buy Upgrades

If you're tech savvy, or know someone who is, you might be able to save money buy purchasing upgrades to get an old laptop up to date. For example, if you find a great laptop that doesn't have wi-fi, you could just buy a wi-fi card and get what you need. Of course, be sure to take into account the cost added from the upgrades. If you keep this option open, though, you just might be able to score a great deal.

4. Check the Battery

This is more a matter of not wasting money rather than saving it, but it's critical that you understand this before buying. The batteries that laptops use have a limited lifespan. After many charges and discharges, the battery gradually looses its ability to hold a charge. This is a common problem with used laptops, and one you need to be on the lookout for. Be sure to ask the seller how long the battery stays charged. If the battery isn't working properly, be sure to factor in the cost of a new one into your calculations.

5. Know Your Pricing

This is important. You need to know how much your laptop of choice sells for, so you can get the great deal. To do this, search for the laptop you're looking for, and select the "show completed listings." This will get you an idea of what past laptops have sold for. You can use this to get an average reference price. Use this price to help spot yourself a great deal.

So, I hope this gives you some idea how you can save on a used laptop by buying through an auction. It's not a guaranteed system, but if you keep up on the listings, you'll certainly be able to find yourself a great deal.
