Useful Tips For Preparing Your Home For Sale

If you are planning to move from your house, you have a lot on your plate. You have to get packed, you have to plan the move, and you have to start preparing your home for sale. This can be a stressful time, but there are some tips to help ease the stress and make this less of a chore.

The first thing you need to do to prepare your home is depersonalize it. Take away all the photos of your family. Buyers want to be able to visualize their own pictures and their own life there. Knick knacks, books, and small furniture should be removed and packed away neatly. These can be stored in closets if needed. Remember, potential buyers do not want to see what you have done to your home, they want to see what they can do to make it theirs.

Along with that, remove all the clutter. There should be no books on the bookshelves, no clothes in closets, and the cabinets should be as bare as possible. The only things that should be present are what will stay with the house. If you need to keep end tables or other things, make sure the potential buyer knows these are not for sale.

If you are still living in the home and trying to sell it (as many people do), you still need to sleep, shower, eat, and live. This is normal. However, keep things as minimal as possible. Keep all your toiletries in a small box and put them on a high shelf when visitors come. Bed linens can stay on beds as long as they are neutral and do not draw attention to themselves. Preparing your home for sale means bare is best.

Again, if you still live in your home and cannot remove food and utensils for visitors, make them as organized as possible. You would not buy a car without driving it first; these potential buyers are not going to buy a house without opening and closing every possible thing. Spices, food and utensils should be organized as much as possible. This can include lining up shoes in hallway closets, making sure all hangers are facing the same way with clothes facing the same way, stacking dishes, and using storage bins to keep flatware together and separate.

These few tips will help you in preparing your home for sale, which will take some stress off you and your family. If you tell yourself, "This is not my home" it can make things easier. Bring in friends or family and ask them if your depersonalized home would make them want to buy it. That can help you see how well you have prepared your home.
