The most widely used plastics used in packaging are polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyurethane (PU), poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and nylons.

Approximately 140 million tones of synthetic polymers are produced worldwide each year. These polymers are extremely stable and do not readily enter into the degradation cycles of the biosphere.
