Using Affirmations To Transform Your Life

It's best to use affirmations frequently, because they seem to work best that way. The way affirmations work is very similar to a ripple effect. When the wind blows against the water, it causes ripples that develop into waves that later on can cause a tsunami.

Affirmations - how they work

Our emotions and beliefs dictate how we lead our lives. Deeply religious people, for example, deal with deprivation and suffering far more optimistically than their less faithful brethren, because they have an underlying belief both that the suffering is intended to strengthen them, and also that they'll be judged by their response to the suffering.

It's in our subconscious minds that we keep our beliefs. Accomplishing and maintaining your goals is very strongly linked to your subconscious belief about how deserving you are. Not only can such negative beliefs about your worthiness to achieve certain goals keep you from doing so, they can also make you very unhappy overall. It's on this subconscious level where we have to make the effort to change the pattern of our beliefs.

Ever heard the phrase to “keep good company and avoid bad company”? We tend to reflect the things and people around us, so that when we keep company with highly goal-oriented people, we tend to become goal-oriented ourselves. The more our behavior changes in response to our external surroundings, the more our subconscious minds change to reflect that new reality. If you surround yourself only with people who are highly critical of everything anyone does, no matter how good their intentions or results, you're going to start exhibiting the same sort of behavior, and your core beliefs will slowly shift to reflect your new reality.

If you change your core beliefs to eliminate the obstacles to your own success, you'll be able to think positively and achieve your goals. Affirmations are powerful tools to use when trying to change your core beliefs. These tips and guidelines should help you to make those changes and accomplish your goals.

* Always seek the best in things and people. Putting your affirmations in negative terms is counterproductive - why try to achieve something positive by using a negative? Our subconscious minds can’t process negative statements. Negative affirmations like "I don't deserve to be unhappy" or "I'm not going to live alone all my life" aren't well processed by our subconscious minds, and usually the opposite is what gets affirmed.

* Use the present tense. Avoid the past or future tense. Affirmations like "I will be happy" or "I will drive a sports car" will always be true only for the future, not for today! Your subconscious mind is very much like a computer - you must carefully consider what you program into it, because it's very literal. Affirmations like "I view adversity as a challenge," and "I choose to be physically fit," will lead to more positive results. Think carefully about the word "choice" in your affirmations. Choice is a powerful concept because it affirms not only the specific thing like wealth or romance, it also reinforces that you're in control of your own life.

* Another critical concept relative to affirmations is repetition. The most effective way to use affirmations is to set aside some time for them several times a day, every day. If you only do it one or two times a day or several times a day but only for a few days, than you’re not going to get the desired results you want. Repeatedly using affirmations several times daily, over the long run, is the best way to get positive results.

* Affirmations can be either be a thought, spoken out loud or written down. Affirmations are most successful when they're frequently repeated. Thinking and writing your affirmations are for times when you can't repeat your affirmations out loud, which is the best. Try to repeat your affirmations ten times each at least twice a day. Write down your affirmations. This will help you to see them. You should try to write your affirmations before you go to sleep, and several other times during the day as well. When you write your affirmations, your subconscious mind is getting the message from your conscious mind as it thinks through the writing process, and also from your eyes, which are watching your affirmations as they're written out. The "card method" described by Napoleon Hill in his book "Think and Grow Rich" is said to be an especially effective method of affirmation. Write your affirmations on an index card and have the card with you at all times. Whenever you can, take a moment to read over the affirmations on the card.

* Another very effective method is the Mirror Technique. One of the best ways to connect with your subconscious mind is to stand in front of the mirror and look right into your eyes. Repeat your affirmations forcefully. Never pass up an opportunity to use the Mirror Technique, using all your heart when repeating your affirmations, and your efforts to change your core beliefs through affirmation will bear fruit. There's no doubt that this technique is very powerful and very effective.

You may be more comfortable with some of the tips and guidelines here than you are with others. That's one of the nice things about using affirmations - they're so very flexible and versatile, you can use any combination you want to. The more change you recognize you need to make in your core beliefs, the longer it's going to take and the more effort you're going to have to put in to make it happen. The more you practice and visualize, though, the faster you can expect your results to start happening.
