Using Bird House Kits As A Family Project
If you have a particular bird in mind you need to learn as much as possible about that bird. Including what types of bird seed it likes. Putting out a bird feeder can attract that type of bird. If you have multiple children each one can choose a different bird. Then you can decide to build a birdhouse for each bird type. This way your children will have to learn about this specific birdhouse style that that bird likes. Each bird has likes and dislikes about the house that it will live in. The size and location of the entrance hole is very important. The size of the living space inside the house is equally important. And where you place it is also important. Having your kids find out these things will enhance their knowledge and bring them closer to nature. Once you have learned all that you need to know you can decide to buy bird house kits. They are usually inexpensive and easy to put together. A lot of them are designed so that children can put them together. This is one of the reasons why it's a great family project. However, bird house kits can be cheaply made and not to the specifications that you require. For instance, the size of the entrance hole and location will come predetermined. That's why I suggest making the bird house from scratch. They're really easy to make and there are hundreds of plans to choose from, some of them even free. Since your children have already done the research you know basically what to make. Then all you have to do is go find a good bird house plan. Children get much more excited and enthralled when you build something from scratch. There are only a few things that you need to keep in mind if you're building your own bird house. Two of them are for proper ventilation and drain holes. A bird house without ventilation is an oven. Most have a sloped roof that overhangs the walls. The ventilation holes are usually drilled at the top of the walls where the eves would be. Drain holes are in the floor to allow waste and water to escape. This cuts down on disease. Although there are several free bird house plans available I do not suggest using them. You may find the proper plan for the specific birds you're looking for but I prefer to know for sure. Also, I like my plans to be thorough and specific. With multiple views and sometimes pictures. This way it is easy and fun for all involved in this project. As you can see this brings a family together and shows your children that you care about nature. This in turn will make them care about nature also, and they will look up to you for that trait. It opens the world to them and they realize that they are part of it. Once you have this project completed and the birdhouse is mounted you can then wait for new tenants. After they have moved in you and your children will feel a sense of pride knowing that you made a difference.
