Using Common Features On Facebook Mobile

Facebook Mobile is a popular way to access common social networking features from an internet capable cell phone. It does not require smartphone access, unlike many social networking applications, making it more widely accessible. The Facebook login screen can be found by pointing the phone's browser to m.facebook.com, and from there most features are readily accessible.

Mobile Texts

The simplest features can be accessed without even opening the phone browser. There are a series of code words that can be included in a text to share information with Facebook Mobile. Text "@" followed by the desired update to FBOOK (32665) to change or update a Facebook status. Send an exact name – such as John Smith – to see that person's profile information. Text "note" followed by the desired body text to publish a note. Send a wall post by texting "wall John Smith" and the body of the post. Text "add John Smith" to send a new friend request. Send a poke by texting "poke John Smith."

Messages Tab

The chat feature does not appear on the phone browser the same way it does on a computer browser, but is still functional. Instead of appearing at the bottom right of the screen, new chat messages will appear under the "Messages" tab. If Facebook texting is enabled, chat messages will go to the phone inbox in the form of a text message, and can be answered easily by replying to the text. New chat conversations can be started by opening the "Messages" tab in the phone browser and selecting "Start a New Message." Alternatively, new conversations can be started by texting "msg John Smith," along with the message body, to FBOOK.

Photos Tab

Existing photos can be viewed under the "Photos" tab in the browser, but new photos can be added as well. Access the tab, select the "Upload Photos" link and click "Choose File" to upload a photo that already exists on the phone. If desired, add some text in the "Caption" box underneath, and then select "Upload." Once the photo has been uploaded to the account, it can be chosen as a profile picture by viewing it and selecting "Make Profile Picture," although it cannot be edited or cropped by phone the way it can on a computer.

Settings Tab

Most settings cannot be changed via mobile, but the most widely edited setting, privacy, can be accessed by selecting the "Settings" tab. The privacy settings are divided into sharing and basic directory categories. Privacy sharing settings affect who can see wall posts and profile information, while basic directory settings affect how a profile is found in the directory, and whether non-friends can contact or send friend requests to an account.

All features are free of charge, but cell service providers may charge a fee for internet access, data sharing or text messaging. Facebook Mobile Texting is only available in the US and Canada, but the web browser features at m.facebook.com can be accessed anywhere.
