Using Lines In Photos – Digital Photography Tips

When taking photos, it can be really hard to get that perfect photography. This article will give you tips for how to use lines in photos.

When it comes to taking photos, having the knowledge and realization that lines are very powerful can, in turn, make your photos much more powerful. Lines are one of those things that are everywhere and once you start to see them you will start noticing ways that you can use these lines to your favor.

First off, I want to tell you that not all lines are straight. This may sound dumb, but look at the curved lines and such. These, in my book, are called lines as well. You can use curved lines just the same way as you can use straight lines.

How to Use Lines 101:
When it comes to using lines, you have lots of ways to use them. Lines all have different reactions and purposes:

Horizontal Lines- These lines are great for taking photos that are calm and peaceful. Think of sunsets. They are all horizontal and very relaxing.

Vertical Lines – Vertically oriented lines are the opposite of horizontal lines. These are very dynamic and filled with energy. If you take a photo of buildings and the lines going up from the bottom of the frame to the top, you can really add a sense of motion.

Now, when I say one lines does this and the other does that, it is not always true. Think of those shots of cityscapes with tall buildings and vertical lines but from far away creating a relaxing shot. The reason is because the vertical lines of the building are not as strong as the horizontal line that they are on. The horizontal line is more powerful and dominates the shot.
