Using Petition Samples To Get Started
• Write the goal of the petition clearly and concisely. You don’t want to bore your readers with a page long opening for the petition. • The petition has to have a professional look, which means you should ensure it is free of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. When you write the goal of the petition, use spell check on your computer and reread it yourself or have someone else read it to proofread it for you. • All petition samples start with the words “We, the undersigned...” • The petition should state to whom it will be sent and that person’s position of authority in having some action taken You have to get the word out that you are circulating this petition. If it is a traditional petition, you will have to go door to door, set yourself up in a location where there are a lot of people who would be interested in signing or place the petition in locations where it will be read by many people. If it is possible to get media coverage for the petition, this is one way to get the word out. Simply calling radio talk shows and explaining what the petition is concerning is one way to get free media coverage. Set up website devoted to the petition so that you have an online petition where you have access to millions of readers. Send emails to all your friends telling them about the petition and where they can go, online or off, to sign their name giving you support. With the increase in the use of online petitions, there are many websites that you can use to help you prepare the petition you want to circulate. With the samples available you may find one that matches your cause exactly. However, you should not copy the words as they are in the sample because this is plagiarism. You are actually stealing someone else’s words if you do this and any Internet user can easily find that you have done this by simply doing a search or software that detects plagiarism. This will do harm to your cause and the petition will not be taken seriously. You should check to make sure your petition meets the requirements for acceptance by the government department, person or organization before you draft it and start to circulate it. In some cases, you will need permission to circulate a petition and you must also have this in place although you do not need to state this on the petition itself. You will find petition samples of all kinds when you do an online search. Some of these are not meant to be taken seriously and are for fun only. Therefore, you should carefully read the wording to make sure that you are not circulating a petition that others will not take seriously because of any frivolous wording that you use.
