The people who are hit hardest in the current gas and electricity crisis are as you would expect, the poorest. They are soon going to have to make the decision as to either eat or stay warm and many people will be adopting past techniques to stay warm in a bid to survive this winter such as extra blankets and maybe even candles.
The ever increasing prices rises are due to the companies who are providing the energy at a wholesale level. They are raising their prices as their fossil fuel resources decrease, this is resulting in a highly competitive market for their customers, the household providers who are also looking to maximise their profit as the resources run low.
An expert states that “The brakes have failed on the energy market. The results are calamitous.
“Protection for the poorest, effective competition and rational wholesale markets should be limiting the impact on consumers. Clearly they are doing no such thing.”
A government official from Plaid Cymru AM states that “It is outrageous that ordinary people living in Wales will be hit by this double whammy on their electricity and gas. It shows that a remorseless market economy is failing the vast majority of people.”
This will no doubt have a knock on effect for the rest of the UK which will force the government into taking action, possibly investing into renewable energy sources.
Steps will have to be taken to enable lower energy bills for this winter, these will include many of the ever so common tips we hear day to day such as turning all appliances off by their sockets and only boiling enough water for what you need.
