In Unix-based operating systems like UnixWare, VTOC or Volume Table Of Contents is a data structure which is responsible for providing a way to locate the data sets that reside on a particular disk volume. The data set can be referred as the file which is having record organization. This data structure is responsible for keeping the track of the information of the data set like size, location and permissions
For each volume, this also lists the free space on the volume. This data structure is commonly found on the first 64K tracks on the volume. These comprise of record known as DSCBs (Data Set Control Blocks).
Basically there are seven types of DSCBs which possess some critical information like attributes of the disk volume of VTOC itself, free space within VTOC and description of data sets such as from where they get started on disk.
