Valencia Top 10: The Best City Spots
1. La ciudad de las artes y las ciencias – Maybe it’s the city symbol. The scientific complex includes three buildings containing: a Laserium, a Planetarium and an IMAX cinema (L’Hemisferic); an Opera House (Palau des Arts); a great marine park and aquarium (l’Oceanographic). 2. El jardí botánico – this spectacular garden was founded to study medicinal plants in 1567. Since 1802 it is located in l’Hort de Tramoyeres and it has been restored in the year 2000. 3. El Puerto y la Playa – in 2007 the port of Valencia became famous worldwide because it hosted the 32nd America’s Cup. Don’t miss a walk at the beach and the promenade facing the seafront. 4. Monasterio Sant Miguel de los Reyes – its facade is built in Renaissance style. The building is also framed by two towers with columns in Baroque style. 5. Museo Nacional de Ceramica - “Gonzalez Marti” museum hosts a collection of great tiles made in the Royal Ceramics Factory. The building has been renewed on rococo style in 1740. 6. Iglesia de San Juan del Hospital – this church dates back to 1261 and it’s one of the oldest in Valencia. Inside you can contemplate the Santa Barbara great chapel and other Gothic ones. 7. Museo des Belles Artes San Pio V – one of the greatest painting collection in Spain. The Museo des Belles Artes San Pio V is located in a restored Baroque building and inside you can find an incredible archive of Valencia painters and other important work by Velázquez, Goya, El Greco and Murillo. 8. Torres de Serranos – it is the greatest city gateway in Gothic style in Europe. The Torres de Serranos was built up at the end of the 14th century by the famous architect Pere Balaguer. 9. La Catedral – the Cathedral has three great gates in different styles: the Iron gate is in Baroque style, the Apostle gate in Gothic and the Palace gate in Romanesque. 10. Plaza del Mercado – declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the Plaza Mercado hosts 3 buildings among which the fabulous Silk Market, an example of Gothic civil architecture in Europe.
