Veterinary Advice For Dog Aggression Problems

Dog aggression problems can be a result of several issues. Veterinary advice that supports medication to cope with the problem should only be considered after exhausting other means. Aggressive behavior could be the result of environmental stress, learned behavior, or natural disposition. Here are a few basic things you can do to help eliminate your dog’s aggressive nature.

Dog Aggression Training: You have to take command. Train your dog to earn attention. Make her sit before she gets her meal or goes outside. Make her lie down before you give her a treat. If you do this consistently, your dog will learn that you are the 'Top Dog' and show less aggression.

Stop it fast: Interrupt every form of aggression. When your dog is barking at someone that he also enjoys biting, such as the newspaper boy, give a command to stop the barking and reward him when he complies.

Avoid Aggressive Games: Tug-of-war is not a good game to play with aggressive dogs. They find it hard to tell the difference between play and aggression.

Socialize: The more people your pet encounters when she is young, the less likely she is to show fear and react with aggression. Have strangers greet your pet with a treat- she will learn to trust them.

Veterinary Advice from a Vet:
Massage can calm your pet. Tracing circles on their tail, mouth and ears each day has a surprisingly calming effect. We have often used a form of this to calm nervous animals in the exam room - the ear tips are especially sensitive.

For a dog that exhibits naturally aggressive tendencies, it is important to avoid aggressive type games (tug-of-war and wrestling to name a few). These activities will only compound the problem by reinforcing this negative behavior. A dog that firmly believes you are the master will be less prone to outbursts of aggression in your presence. The “treat” system when used properly can have a strong impact on the psyche of your dog.
