Visit Atlanta’s Anne Frank Holocaust Exhibit

The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust is sponsoring an educational exhibit entitled “Anne Frank in the World: 1929-1945.” The exhibit is hosted by the City of Sandy Springs, a northern suburb of Atlanta. The Anne Frank exhibit is free and open to the public Tuesday through Sunday.

The commission is a state agency that is nondenominational, multiracial, and bipartisan. The purpose of the commission is to create educational programs that teach the lessons of the Holocaust, so that such crimes against humanity as prejudice and racism will not be repeated in the future. “Anne Frank in the World” is an award-winning exhibit that was brought to Atlanta from the Netherlands. In addition to maintaining exhibits related to the Holocaust, the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust develops teaching materials, holds seminars, and provides speakers to schools and community organizations. Each year students in grades 6-12 may participate in an annual art, writing, and music contest conducted by the commission.

“Anne Frank in the World: 1929-1945” chronicles the story of Jewish teenager Anne Frank and her family as they fled from Germany to the Netherlands to escape the Nazis during World War II. As the Nazis took over the Netherlands, Anne’s family was forced to hide in a secret annex above the family business in Amsterdam. The family successfully hid for two years before they were betrayed to the Nazis. They were then sent to concentration camps where all members of the family except the father, Otto Frank, died. After the war, Otto found that his daughter’s diary had been saved, and he had it published in 1947. Anne’s diary has been printed in more than 60 languages.

The Anne Frank exhibit allows children to better understand the consequences of hatred and discrimination. The exhibit contains more than 600 photos along with written documentation. There is also a 30 minute video entitled “The Short Life of Anne Frank”. This video contains the only known footage of Anne. Visitors will see a replica of Anne’s room in the hidden annex and be able to take a virtual tour of the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. Another component of the exhibit is “Witness to the Holocaust: WWII Veteran William Alexander Scott III”. Scott was a photojournalist who witnessed the liberation of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.

The Anne Frank exhibit is located in the Parkside Shopping Center at 5920 Roswell Road NE in Sandy Springs, just outside the I-285 perimeter. Hours are Tuesday-Thursday from 10am-4pm, Friday from 10am-2pm, and weekends from noon to 4pm.
