Visit Columbia’s Sesquicentennial State Park

Sesquicentennial State Park preserves a beautiful natural area in the northern suburbs of Columbia, South Carolina. Known as “Sesqui” to the locals, the park provides more than 1,400 acres of welcome green space. Once immersed in this mixed forest of hardwoods and pines trees, visitors forget they are so close to an urban area.

The park was one of several parks developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. A number of the original buildings are still in use. Sesquicentennial means 150 years, and the park was a gift to the city of Columbia to celebrate its 150th birthday.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities in Sesquicentennial State Park. Trails allow visitors to explore the sandhills and learn about the ecosystem. There is a beautiful stand of live oaks within the park. The Jackson Creek Nature Trail is an easy walk at .4 miles. Two other hiking trails are a bit longer. The Sandhills Hiking Trail is approximately 2 miles long, and the Loop Road Trail is 3.5 miles in length. Hikers may spot a variety of birds and other wildlife in the park, including deer and river otters. A 6 mile mountain bike trail is popular with bikers. Fishermen will find bass and bream in the park’s 30 acre lake. A South Carolina fishing license is required. Non-motorized fishing boats can be rented in season for $12 per day. Canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats can also be rented in season for $5 per hour or $15 per day. Visitors are welcome to bring their own non-motorized boats to the lake. There is no boat ramp.

Picnickers will find five picnic shelters scattered around the lake. There are two playgrounds near the picnic areas. The park also has a basketball court, a sand volleyball court, a softball field, and a dog park. The dog park requires a permit and a user fee. Camping is available in the park. All campsites have water and electrical hookups. Groups may rent the Retreat Center, which comes equipped with a kitchen and dorm style accommodations. The park has a ropes course that is a popular activity for corporate retreats.

Sesquicentennial State Park is located at 9564 Two Notch Road (US Hwy 1), thirteen miles northeast of downtown Columbia. Two Notch Road is accessed at Exit 17 off I-77 or Exit 74 off I-20. Park admission is $2 for adults and $1.25 for SC seniors and children ages 15 and under. The park is open daily from 8am-6pm, with extended hours of 7am-9pm during Daylight Savings Time.
