Voip Adsl - The Affordable Way To Call

Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) provides people, who own a computer and fast internet access, the chance to make and receive phone calls to and from anyone in the world at a small cost. Some are even free. The technology has become great news and many are catching up. But how do you avail of the service? Well, there are a number of ways to choose from. One is by plugging an internet phone bundled with software to run on the computer. Another is opting for a VOIP ADSL.

VOIP ADSL only means that an ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line) router is connected to a computer. This router has a VOIP adapter built-in, which enables the router to convert phone calls into IP packets and back again. Audio data from computer phone calls then gets transmitted through an ADSL connection after they are converted.

The IP packets received from transmission is then converted back to audio for the person at the destination to hear. ADSL routers use a protocol, commonly known as SIP or Session Initiation Protocol, to register a computer to the online VOIP service provider. After registering, a person can now make or receive calls to other VOIP ADSL users or PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) subscribers through the service provider’s gateway.

There are other pluses to using VOIP ADSL. One is that you can use an ordinary analog phone to make phone calls from the computer by connecting the handset to the router with the corresponding connector. Another good thing is that the user can still use the handset phone in the event of emergencies or power outages. Also, there are router features that one can get for better system security such as firewall protection.
