Want To Punch And Kick Faster?

Check out the answers to these FAQ's :

Will my punch get faster with time?
Yes, you can increase the speed of a punch or kick by performing high repetitions of it. The more times you throw the punch or kick the more coordinated it becomes, and therefore the less effort it requires to perform it. It may sound simple, but it is a very effective approach to building speed.

What can I do to increase my speed?
Here's a way to trick your body into becoming faster. Practice your punches and kicks alternately with no weights, then a small 1 or 2 pound weight, then back to no weights. What happens is that you are tricking your body into using less “antagonistic” muscles, the muscles that fight against the action you are trying to perform with speed. The less antagonistic muscles used, the faster you are.

How can I improve my reaction time?
The ability to initiate a punch or kick once you've “perceived” (consciously or subconsciously) that you need to throw it is considered “reaction” time. One of the main factors affecting reaction time is body positioning. For example, if your balance must be shifted before you can initiate the attack, that increases the time it will take for your attack to land. In a self-defense situation, if you stand with your hands in your pockets, or your legs are straight, you must reposition them before you can initiate a powerful punch or kick, which will slow down your reaction time.

Why is it that sometimes my punches seem faster than other times?
There are other factors that affect your speed, like being well-rested. If you are tired or distracted, chances are your speed will be affected.

What training tools can I use to help build speed?
Any training tool that forces you to react in time to it, or “hits back”, will naturally cause you to improve your awareness and, therefore, your speed. One such tool is the Smart Bag Free Standing Heavy Bag.
