Determination, proper diet and the right kind of exercise are what it takes to achieve washboard abs. It can take from one to eight weeks depending on the amount of fat in the body and the amount of cardio used to complement your routines. One common misconception about using weights is that they can cause bulking. This is not true because the abdominal muscles normally develop to suit function and not to grow in size.

Using weight machines especially those with cables can help to isolate specific angles that normally help to work specific regions of the abdominal muscles. This will in the long run give you the desired results. Weight machines keep you more challenged unlike other exercises such as crunches.

Exercise balls are also very important. Doing crunches or simply sitting on a Swiss ball can force your abdominal muscles to work together with other core muscles. While some of these exercises can seem like fun, they are strenuous workouts and can help to develop washboard abs. Exercise balls help to provide the needed kick start to your regular ab routines. Since these balls force perfect form, they can provide a strong foundation to your routines.

Although pilates are considered as an exercise for women, men can also use them to develop their abdominal muscles. Pilates exercises normally imitate natural movement and this makes the affected abdominal muscles more functional. These exercises are also beneficial in the sense that they provide back support. They also work on the muscles that surround the abdominal muscles.
