Watch “red State” Online

Kevin Smith’s style of movies can’t be confused with anyone else’s. He really knows what exactly he’s doing and he’s brave enough not to follow viewer’s expectations. That's why I decided to watch “Red State” online and form my own opinion about it. Smith’s “Red State” is another convincing proof of my words. In the beginning, this movie looks like a story of three homophobic teenagers who answer an internet sex ad and think they are going to have a date with an older woman. But all of a sudden they get caught by a religious fanatic Abin Cooper (played by Michael Parks), a pastor and a leader of a radical religious group. Cooper believes that sinners must be punished in a most severe way and he is ready to become God’s arm of justice. So the kids get into a very frightening situation.

But there is the third line in the plot which is connected with an ATF agent played by John Goodman known by ‘Treme’ tv-series. In his view, Cooper is the only man in this story who must be punished for different crimes. So we can see that the fanatic’s belief turns against him. In my view, this is the main idea of the movie. The tone and genre of ‘Red State’ change completely, and it looks more like an action than mystery or thriller. The final scene is full of shots, blood and violence. However, it is probably the weakest moment of the movie. In fact, there are no real protagonists so you can’t feel any emotions about some killed characters that generally should evoke our sympathy.

Though the script is not ideal, the acting is just perfect. All the actors of ‘Red State’ showed wonderful performances. The teenagers seem to be naturally scared by Cooper’s sermons. Michael Parks played a really scary man showing how wrong our deepest beliefs can be. He’s extremely certain in everything connected with his faith, and that’s what makes him so dangerous for other people. John Goodman’s character is the only one we can really feel sympathy for, because he gets into a situation that needs making bold decisions quickly.

Obviously ‘Red State’ won’t attract too many viewers; but those who like to watch movies not as stupid and predictable as regular ones and prefer unclicheed entertainment will enjoy this thriller for sure.
