Wireless nanny cameras
A few decades ago, a baby born in a large family would be constantly attended to. New family equations changed this scenario, with parents having to manage household chores and look after the baby as well. This necessitated the development of a baby alarm or a baby monitor. In its early form, this was a unidirectional tool with a microphone placed near the infant and a speaker, which helped receive sounds made by the infant. An advanced version of this was bidirectional equipment, which would also allow the caregiver to communicate with the infant, allowing him/her to work in a room while the baby was playing or sleeping in another room.
As technology advanced and digital cameras and webcams were developed, these baby alarms were modified to include video footage too. Societal changes with both parents working led to the baby being taken care of nannies or care providers who were hired for this purpose. This raised a question of trust and security – leaving the child with a stranger at home for long hours did not sound too safe an option. Add to this the possibility of potential abuse by the nanny, lack of attention towards the child, misuse of the home etc., and the need to monitor the home and the child became all the more important. In such a situation, nanny cameras proved a great boon. Advancement in technology has also made availablewireless nanny cameras which can be discreetly hidden in a variety of household items like a plant pot, wall clock, or a stuffed toy. The receiver is plugged to the TV, and by simply changing channels you can keep an eye on your baby.
A basic model of the nanny camera can be obtained in most electronic stores for as less as about $100. Parents feel that the security provided by a nanny camera more than makes up for its cost. Higher end models with a lot of special features are also available in special outlets or can be ordered online.
The use of nanny cameras has become so accepted and popular that in the United States, all the 50 states have made it legal to use nanny cameras. Most nannies are receptive to the fact that they are being watched, but would like to be informed of the fact instead of being secretly taped. This instills trust in them and reduces the incidence of misuse. Monitoring them without prior notice leads to a feeling of deception and of being ‘spied upon’. Once they are informed, some nannies opt not to work under surveillance with a nanny camera. The wireless nanny camera lets you watch your child grow as he naps as an infant, plays as a toddler, does his homework in the living room, and grows into a teenager over the years.
