Web Design Is All About Content

Web designers often forget what the ultimate goal of any website or web application is: to deliver content to the user. The content can be static (like an informational website), or highly dynamic (like a chat application), in the end it always comes down to making content accessible to internet users.

Noam Design has designed hundreds and hundreds of websites and is currently working on more than 20 web design and web development projects! All this work revolves around communicating content on the internet. The only exception to this rule (kind of) is online gaming. But this will be the topic of another blog post…

As a generality, it is pretty safe to say that a great website is a website that emphasizes the content it presents. And how the website should be designed depends on the nature of the content delivered on the website, as well as the target population, market pool, user behavior and interests, etc… There should be an intricate relationship between the content communicated to the user and the container presenting it, i.e. the website design. More often than not, a beautiful website is all about beautiful content.

A couple of weeks ago I went to Ikea to buy a bed/crib for my baby and I realized how this successful company mastered the “it’s all about content” concept. Subtle lightening, careful organization and ordering of elements, space management, etc, is what can make the simplest piece of furniture look so attractive. To a trained eye, it is obvious that their interior design experts paid attention to the smallest details. For example, they place dummy content such as fake screens on the desks - but all screens are covered with printed website screenshots! It’s all about good content. Good dummy content in this case.

I look forward to your comments and examples!
