Web Designvs Web Development

The terms web design and web development though looks synonyms but in reality there is a vast difference in their functionality. Web design means the outlook of a website and the web development would involve the website’s functionality.

Web design is usually concerned with the creative part of the website, whereas web development is mostly linked to the coding part. Web design is referred to as the front end as it is seen by people where as web development is referred to as back end as its coding part is not visible to the visitors.

The work of a web designer usually revolves around the colors, the font, the images and with all these ingredients aesthetically present the page layout of a website and would try to make it as attractive as possible to attract the maximum number of people who would visit the website.
In contrast, web developer’s deal with that part which is invisible to the outer world but is very significant as it is concerned with the efficient functioning of a website. Web developer would be responsible for developing and coding server side applications, databases, e-commerce transactions and for search engine optimization.

A website comprises of:
1. Look and feel
2. Content
3. Functionality
4. Usability

Look and feel would focus on the appearance of the website. A web designer would decide on the colors and the font and with his creativity aesthetically make a website.

Content: It is the text that is present on the website and it conceptualizes all the services the website caters too. It also contains catalogue of the products the website offer online and are presented in such a beautiful and artistic way that it attract the visitors who readily agrees to part with their hard earned money.

Functionality: It includes all the interactive aspects of a website and the animation. Flash is used for animation and Perl, php and java programming languages are used on the web server to create dynamic web server pages.

Usability: Usability is the checkpoint of how friendly and interactive the website is for the users.
Does the look and feel are actually portraying the proper image?
Is the navigation is user friendly?
Does the navigation lead the visitor to where the owner wants them to go?
Does the site load quickly?
Do the applications work properly?

As discussed earlier there is a vast difference between web design and web development. Web designers need to be proficient in Photo shop and other graphic tools and should also we well versed with HTML and the use of the tools that create HTML and the web developer need to excel in providing functionality of the site and they have to integrate their functionality into the HTML pages on the site.

Web design and web development though are the sides of the same coin, they are interdependent and interlinked with each other. Web designer has its part to play in the creation of the website and the web developer has its own role. By combining the key ingredients of the design and the development we can attain a highly creative and functional website.
