Web Hosting Concerns For Very Complex Sites

Many businesses are moving toward a model where more and more of their services are available online. In the past, this meant making customer services available online although, in the modern era, this oftentimes means making services which are only applicable to employees and their needs available over the Internet. This may involve complex technologies such as remote access to company servers and database applications which allow employees to instantly obtain information related to their hours worked, benefits and other vital elements of working for the company. All of these things add to the complexity of one's web hosting needs.

Web hosting for these needs has two principal requirements: it must be adequately secure to ensure that no vital information is compromised and it must have adequate bandwidth to ensure that heavy usage does not cause a company to run over its allocated amount and thus be assessed with hefty overage fees. In most cases, this will mean that the company will need to purchase a dedicated hosting account or purchase their own server and host it on their own site. The former option has significant advantages that, with the exception of very rare cases, make it the best possible move.

A dedicated server account essentially avails accompany of an entire machine which can be controlled in its entirety from a remote location. This task will most certainly require the services of a highly trained and very experienced IT professional. One must keep in mind that everything, including security, is being set up from scratch in this scenario and that the smallest mistake could very well result in the security of very sensitive information being compromised. For that reason, plan on either contracting or using existing IT resources for this task.

If one happens to host their own mail server at their company, this should not be on the same server machine as are the rest of the company's services. In some cases, the mail server may be able to be purchased at a reduced rate compared to that required for the dedicated server. In either case, mail servers do not like to share space with other Internet services. This also creates a security hole wherein one could potentially use the mail server as a means to access other sensitive company data and, for that reason, mail servers and Internet servers are almost never seen on the same machines.
