Web Redirection

Web redirection occurs when somebody types a URL into their browser or clicks on a link that relocates them to another location. Incorporating redirection into your website is important for the benefits that it provides both in functionality and in search engine optimization SEO. It is beneficial when links are pointed at a specific page on your site, but if that page has been moved or deleted for organizational purposes, this doesn't mean that the links should bring users and search engines to an empty page. Redirection ensures that these former links don't go to waste.

While there are several different types of web redirection, there are three which are very common. These are the meta refresh element, the 302 temporary redirect, and the 301 permanent redirect. All three methods ensure that traffic doesn't show up on a blank page of your site, but each option has its own particular uses.

The meta refresh element is best used on sites that do not support the other two types of redirects. This is most common with free or inexpensive hosting accounts. Even if HTML is the only tool available, this form of redirection can be achieved. This element is simply added to the header of the deleted web page. This element contains the new URL that the visitor will be directed to. While this redirect does work, it is not always useful for SEO purposes, as the search engines will sometimes still give the link credit to the original location of the page.

In contrast, the temporary 302, redirect explicitly informs the search engines that the page has been moved to a new location. This type of redirect can be implemented using scripting languages or utilities, but it can not be accomplished using pure HTML. Since a 302 redirect is seen to be temporary, it does not pass the link credit to the new location. Instead, it indexes the content on the new page as though it were listed on the original page.

A 301 redirect is considered to be permanent. Again, it is implemented using scripting language or utilities such as Mod Rewrite. This form of web redirection indicates to the search engines that the page has been permanently moved to a new location. The search engines take this to mean that all of the links pointed at the old site should actually be pointed at the new site instead.
