Web Traffic
Hits Every time any user goes to any page or image on your site it is called a hit. You might think that this represents the real traffic going to your site. Really it isn’t that simple. Imagine you have a webpage with two images and one video file. In the ‘hits’ on your website, every time a user goes to that page it will show as four hits. Why? One is for the page. Add two for the two photo files (at a different location stored). Add another hit for the video file. Therefore, the number of hits, well useful, is not a good representation of the number of visitors. Unique Visitors Every computer in the world has a unique IP address just like land phone lines. The calculation ‘unique visitors’ is based on one (and only one) for each unique computer to computer connection. This means that if a regular customer goes to your site each day to purchase he/she will be counted one time forever in the ‘unique visitors’. If that same customer uses two different computers – one at the office and one at home, he/she will be counted ‘two’ in the unique visitors. Similarly, if two people connect from the same computer to your site it will be recorded as one in ‘unique visitors’. Although it is not a perfect indication of the number of customers/prospects, this statistic still remains the best choice for the traffic on your site. Bandwidth Every file, document, and page takes storage on a server computer. When you host a site you are given a maximum amount of storage. Nowadays, storage is very inexpensive and so you are usually given a large amount. However, most people don’t realize that the expense on a website nowadays is bandwidth. Every time a visitor accesses your pages on your site he/she must download to their computer the page, graphics, documents and/or video. This amount downloaded over a period of time is called the bandwidth. Bandwidth is very expensive. Websites with streaming video or high end flash cost a lot in bandwidth. Often users measure the bandwidth versus the increase business to see if the costs match the profits. To save in your own bandwidth on your server, people often host the videos and flash on a third party such as otlix.com. Bandwidth is not only less expensive but advanced statistics show how and where that bandwidth was used – by file, country, time, date and more!
