Website Design Tips For Success

Thinking of creating your own website? Already have a website? Below are three website design tips to help you on your way.

Width: Right now the most common monitor resolution is 1024 x 768 pixels. So don't make your website any wider than 1024 pixels (1000 pixels would be ideal). The reason for this is that if it's any wider your website visitors will be left scrolling side to side, as well as up and down and this can get pretty frustrating. There are probably still some people out there that are using screen resolutions of 800 x 600 or even 640 x 480 but they are the exception. With today's technology and the low prices for large monitors there's no reason to be using such low resolutions. So you will be pretty safe designing your website to be 1000 pixels wide.

Website Graphics: When designing your web graphics be mindful of the file sizes. While high speed DSL and cable internet access are commonplace there still are some people using dialup who live in remote areas where high speed access is not available yet. Don't post 100 photos on your homepage so that it takes minutes to load. Don't post audio or video clips that automatically play when a person lands on your site as they can take time to load and buffer. Even with a high speed connection I find that to be annoying. Give your visitors the choice and let them push the play button on your embedded video or audio clip if they want to hear or see it.

Navigation: Poor navigation can kill even the best looking website. If people can't figure out where to click or how to get to another part of your website they will just leave. Remember, you have a small window of time to capture your visitor's attention and interest. If they get frustrated they will hit their back button and try another website and you lose a potential customer. You have to consider that the baby boomers are getting older and even some retirees are getting online. It may not be obvious to them where to click or how to navigate your site. The best policy is to keep it simple.

Ask friends, family or coworkers to check out your website and offer their opinions. It's better to catch potential problems before you open the doors for real.
