Weeled Bags-what A Great Idea
The journey back from my holiday was a nightmare, dragging my luggage after me and navigating the maze and obstacle course, from hotel to plane. Cursing my luggage for the bruised shins and praying the duty free was still intact, I saw an amazing bag. It was being pulled along by an elderly lady, like a normal wheeled bag but at rough ground and stairs she just slung on her shoulders just like a rucksack. That’s what it was, a rucksack with wheels how brilliant. There I was left to drag my bag across gravel, up and down steps (I’m sure my wheels don’t spin now) and she just slung her bag on her back. Aren’t the simplest ideas the best? Now I’d never seen this type of bag before and was determined to buy one for my next holiday, so where do I buy them from and how much are they? So sat in front of my computer armed with a mug of tea I set to work. What types of bags are there? Which is best? What do I look for? How much are they? Where do I buy them from? It took a lot longer than I expected, so I’ll give you some of my results. Yes size matters, too big and it’s not hand luggage, too small and you can’t fit enough into it. I know it’s obvious but with airlines ever changing strict criteria on bag size it does matter. The shape does affect the amount of storage space you have. The more rounded or stylish the bag is the less internal space you have for a set size. Does the back pack have external pockets? Very handy for getting to items quickly, but fill the pockets and they increase the size of your bag, and you may not get through the hand luggage criteria. You will have to carry your rucksack and when full it will be quite heavy so padded shoulder straps and handles are a must. There are 2 types of wheeled rucksacks, 2 wheeled and 4 wheeled. 4 wheels make the bag more stable and easier to roll than 2. Make sure that the wheels are recessed into the bag for protection, as a proud wheel can easily get sheared off on any proud projection. I’m afraid that quality costs. To make your rucksack with wheels light, strong and durable the best materials should be used. The best fabric used in the manufacture of wheeled rucksacks is ballistic and cordura, with a dernier of 1000 to 1050. Dernier is a measurement of the nylons weight; less normally indicates a lower quality material. If a backpack is going to fail it is usually the zipper. There are 2 types of zipper: A chain zipper which is made from injection molded resins fused directly onto the zipper tape making them incredibly strong and robust also more resistant to dirt & sand. Coil zippers are more flexible, less expensive and easier to install, but do give when put under strain. The weight of your wheeled backpack is also a main factor to consider when purchasing, you will have to carry it and if it’s too heavy when empty it will be extremely uncomfortable when full.
