Westfield Accountant Runs Marine Corps Marathon

A Westfield accountant went from crunching numbers to pounding pavement on Sunday, joining over 20,000 other people from around the world for the Marine CorpsMarathon in Washington, D.C.

Richard Rowe, 55, came in 5,882 out of the 20,895 total finishers. His time was clocked at 4:09:54. This is Rowes eighth marathon; his first marathon was the Marine Corps Marathon in 2006, which he ran with his wife and their oldest son. He originally ran shorter races before working his way up to the Marine Corps Marathon.

Race day was a sunny but chilly Washington day. The race started at 8 a.m., between the Pentagon and Arlington Memorial Drive. Runners then continued along the course, passing by D.C. monuments and landmarks.
Rowe, with his Asics Gel Nimbus 13 shoes with September 2011 the month and year he purchased the shoes so he can know when to replace them written on the soles of them, ran to his playlist - a mix of Bruce Springsteen, The Eagles, Aerosmith, and some other classic rock favorites to keep him at a constant pace.

Its a great race, a great venue, and it was my first and its possible that this is my last marathon, he said, explaining that he has had some trouble with his knees recently.

Knee trouble was a factor in Rowes goals for this race. The first time he ran theMarine Corps Marathon his finishing time was around four hours and nineteen minutes. This time, his goal was to beat four hours and fifteen minutes. He was not going to let his current knee problems prevent him from finishing the race.

I would have to be seriously injured to not finish a race, he said.

Finishing races has been just as big of a reward for Rowe as beating his best time has been.

Because Im older than a lot of runners, I get a lot of satisfaction finishing a race and seeing that I beat runners half my age, he said.
Rowe finished in the top 58 percent of runners in the 55-59 age range. The two biggest age ranges for the Marine Corps Marathon this year is the 29-30 range and 39-40 range said Amy Beaulieu, communications coordinator for the marathon. The race was established in 1976 and originally had a little over 10,000 participants. Since then, the race has continued to gain popularity, with registration for this years race reaching 30,000 runners. The race has gotten the nickname of The Peoples Race because it is the largest race that does not offer prize money for the finishers or requires a qualifying time to register.
