What Are Binaural Beats? An Introductory Guide

What are Binaural Beats?

Binaural beats is an effect, confirmed by science, that occurs when two slightly different audio signals are heard separately by the right and left ear (using headphones or similar device) in a manner that causes the brain to tune into the frequency that results through the difference in the two signals through a process called brain wave entrainment.

There are five common brain wave frequency ranges--Gamma, Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta--each which is associated with specific types of mental states. Binaural beats can be used to intentionally tune into any of these frequencies and enjoy their corresponding benefits.

For example, Gamma waves are associated with heightened mental activity, problem solving, and alert levels of consciousness, while Theta waves are associated with dreaming, deep meditation, even and astral projection or out-of-body experiences!

What Are the Benefits of Binaural Beats?

Using these beats to tune into specific brain wave frequencies can produce a number of beneficial effects, including stress reduction, deep relaxation, heightened alertness, greater concentration, stimulation of creativity, increased memory, improved meditation, lucid dreaming, astral projection, and many more.

Many people simply use beats to reduce stress and achieve a state of deep relaxation. Others use them as an aid to meditation and lucid dreaming. For example, many people who have difficulty meditating successfully use the beats to help them achieve deeper states of meditation. Others may use them to improve memory or alertness. Still others may use the beats prior to sleeping in order to explore experiences like lucid dreaming or out of body experiences.

Are There Any Dangers?

There are really no known inherent dangers associated with binaural beats. There is no limit to how frequently you can listen to them. They are not addictive. However, one thing you may want to be careful of is, say, listening to a beat designed for deep relaxation while driving or doing any other activity that requires alertness.

Conversely, you wouldn't want to listen to a beat designed to stimulate alertness right before going to bed if you are having trouble sleeping. So be sure to listen to beats that have been created to provide the mental state you desire to achieve.
