What Are Mental Illnesses?
There are five aspects that we usually evaluate: thinking, memory, attention, emotion and behavior. A disturbance in any of these aspects, intense enough to interrupt normal activity in more then one functioning fields (ex. home and at work, work and community), for a period longer then two weeks (in some cases even six to twelve months), is diagnosed as mental illness or disturbance. Are mentally ill people aggressive? No. Just a small part of them is suffering affections which include episodes of severe disinhibition, aggressive behavior, self or hetero violence. In most of the cases we are talking about depressions, panic attacks, phobias or obsessive-compulsive disorders. All these bring enormous suffering to the individual, but do not transform them in social predators. Not even close to this. Can these people be cured? The answer is "yes", they can be cured. There is a minority of affections that were so much promoted to be incurable that people started to believe that they really are incurable. We are talking here about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (maniac depressive), etc. Most of these illnesses, under medical treatment, are not even observable. In the end, it is very important to know that early identification and treatment is of vital importance. Is there any non-medical treatment? Yes, there is. Psychotherapy has been part of the practice of psychiatry for generations. Various forms of psychotherapy, either alone or in combination with medications, are recommended for the treatment of major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder and other psychiatric illnesses.
