It will automatically send an email response to someone who asks for information from you. However, when you start to get overwhelmed with requests for information, you definitely will!

You would expect to pay about £20 a month for a decent autoresponder. Much less than that and you would need to check them out fully to find out what you are being offered. Free autoresponders are also available, but do tend to advertise themselves more than they do you.

Using an autoresponder is the first part of building a list. When someone enters their contact details into the form on your capture page or other website page, they are then on your 'list'. If some new information comes to light which you want your list to know about, or you want to give them details of a webinar that is coming up, these broadcasts can be very useful. One thing that an autoresponder is good for is positioning you as a leader. A prospect generally enters their contact details because you are offering them something they want, such as a free training or more information. Once they have that, then continue to get mail from you, they begin to trust you and recognise your name.
