What Can Ruin A Cup Of Otherwise Great Coffee

We start nearly every single day with coffee, and really enjoy it following an excellent dinner as well. We're not that picky and enjoy brewed coffees, espresso, cappuccino, and much more. There are plenty of options of coffees that absolutely rock and we do like variety at times. But a lot of coffee just isn't that good. It is absolutely shocking to me! There are several things that can ruin or make poor coffee.

Coffee needs to be fresh. Both freshly roasted and made. You can’t compare mass produced canned stuff with freshly roasted and ground coffee. It’s like comparing old frozen fish (with freezer burn!) to fresh fish. And the coffee needs to be freshly made too. If it’s been sitting on a warmer for hours it will be stale and probably burnt. How can people not know and taste the difference, or perhaps some just do not care.

The water matters too. I find most tap water to be acceptable, but it isn’t always. For example the water is my office is atrocious tasting and ruins an otherwise good cup of coffee. If the water is that bad simply use bottles water. It doesn't have to be expensive spring water as almost any water will do.

Coffee strength matters as well. My friend Paul makes coffee that is so weak it’s not worth drinking! Most of us are flexible here, and there is a range of acceptable strengths. Some people measure fastidiously but I simply eyeball it and it always comes out well.

Not every cup of coffee is worth drinking unfortunately. I usually make my own to ensure quality, and often make single cups at a time to guarantee freshness.
