What Do Psychologist Really Know?

Psychological therapy has grown immensely over the past seventy years. It is important to remember that the first psychologists were medical doctors called psychiatrists, and that we were primarily concerned with healing mental illness through a groundbreaking new treatment called psychotherapy. Early psychiatrists such as Freud and Jung considered themselves primarily to be scientists, and while their methods and theories of the human psyche were disparate, they were both intent on uncovering the workings of the inner mind. And their impact has been enormous. Although concepts such as the subconscious are still technically unproven theory, they are in taken as general knowledge by the public and accepted by therapists.

These scientists of the mind were working in an entirely new field and came up with some pretty outlandish theories that are not accepted at all today. But they also came up with techniques that have been proven over and over again to work effectively, especially in the areas of persuasion.

Your psychologist knows all of this and much more, and may even consider herself a 'Jungian' or 'Maslowian.' Especially during the 1960's however, psychiatry and psychology experienced a great rift and we have a situation today in which psychiatry pays little attention to psychological theory and psychology is prohibited from treating patients with psychoactive medicine. Many patients though receive both.

In conclusion though, it is hard to say what psychologists actually know as fact, but a good psychologist is very skillful at interpreting a patient's emotional state and prescribing efficacious therapies. The field has a long way to grow, and the schism between psychiatry does not help. But psychologists do know a lot about human nature and emotion. They are, so to speak, scientists of the subjective.
