What Does The Horsefield Tortoise Eat

The horsefield tortoise is widely preferred as a pet among people who want to keep tortoises as pets. The main reason for this is its small size. A more common name given to a horsefield tortoise is the tortoise of Asia particularly because it is found here. One thing that is common with almost all tortoises of this type is that they are almost experts at digging and climbing. This is because Asia is common for its rocky soil. Horsefield tortoises can be found in dry lands, grass lands and semi grassy fields.

One of the basic characteristic about a horsefield tortoise is that they are vegetarian. The horsefield tortoises like to eat green vegetation. They are very fond of weeds, green plants and other forms of natural vegetation. These tortoises cannot digest animal proteins and should not be given those. However, it is important that you ensure presence of fiber and calcium in their food. Calcium is not only important for the development of a healthy shell, but is also needed for the creation of vitamin D3. At the same time, these tortoises should be given a diet which is low in fat.

Like any other reptile, the horsefield tortoise will want fresh and clean water daily. It is hence advisable to place a large shallow bowl or a huge tray of water for them to drink from. This water must be changed at regular intervals in order to avoid building up of bacteria.

The horsefield tortoise is used to living in extreme environmental conditions. This is the reason why they stay active only for a few months. When the weather turns unbearably hot or cold, the horsefield tortoises usually hibernate. This hibernation lasts for a few days to a few months.

When it comes to the tortoise houses for this tortoise, they grow best when they have both outdoor and indoor facilities. For indoor accommodation, a tortoise table is best recommended for a horsefield tortoise. It is both highly ventilated and large. The outdoor enclosures must necessarily replicate the natural environment which the tortoise is most comfortable in. With outdoor enclosures; you also have to ensure that the tortoise is safe from any predators that might cause harm to the tortoise. Necessary precautions should also be taken to prevent the tortoise from escaping.

There should also be an arrangement for the tortoise to dig in as tortoises like digging and burrowing a lot. Horsefield tortoise also needs a place to hide or go in to hibernation. This place should be provided in the enclosure along with sufficient light and heat. Natural sunlight is the best source of vitamins for the tortoise hence; they should be allowed a good dose of natural sunlight. It is also advised that the male and the female tortoise should not be kept together unless for breeding and they should not be bred till they are 8 years old.

The most striking feature of a horsefield tortoise is that it has a claw on the tip of its nail. The Horsefield tortoise is not considered a suitable pet for first-timers.
